Why
is it that every remotely emo band automatically sounds "just
like the Get Up Kids"? Well, despite what you may have
heard, Ashtray Babyhead doesn't sound like them. They're not
really emo either. Yes, they have the crunching guitars and
some melancholoy middle-class white-boy lyrics, but there is
a sense of sheer excitement present in Radio that makes Ashtray
Babyhead too fun for the emo label.
While they crib a great deal from Weezer (I'll do anything),
and the Foo Fighters (Radar, Satellite) there's also an element
of Presidents of The U.S.A. (Popstar Radio Crown) that resonates
throughout the album. An almost KISS-style sense of rock'n'roll
fun permeates the album. There's some nice glam guitar licks,
especially in "Satellite", a song containing the
lyrics "tune me in some Motley Crue from '83."
Radio is a great album from the introductory megahertz wobble
on "Mir" to the fading final note on "The Real
Soft One." It's not gonna change the world, but these
are damn good pop songs. Ashtray Babyhead wears its influences
on its sleeve and still manages to put out an album that sounds
original and interesting. "The Real Soft One" closes
the album with the most original and captivating tune Ashtray
has yet recorded, incorporating some Cure/Echo influences
into their already esteemed pedigree.
