For over 30 years now, Canadian folkie Bruce Cockburn (the 'ck' is silent) has been writing memorable, thought-provoking songs and building a strong, loyal following. Apparently, releasing a new best-of package every few years is some kind of rule up north - Rush did it with live albums, about 60 of them - and Cockburn's fourth such set (his second 'singles' collection) shows that he is doing anything but mellow with age.

To gear up for the release a new studio album & Rounder's rerelease of his first 17 albums, both coming later this year, Cockburn has collected samples of his finest work, adding two new studio tracks as bookends for this retrospective. His political beliefs surface in a few places - "The Trouble With Normal," "Call It Democracy," "If I Had a Rocket Launcher," as edgy now as when they were recorded nearly 20 years ago - but Cockburn achieves what most singer-songwriters never even approach: despite the political edge, it never feels like he's forcing anything down your throat.

Cockburn the guitarist shines on every track here, and the newer material is easily some of the best. Closing the album on a soothing note, the title track serves both a fitting coda and an intriguing look forward.
